This program entails participants completing the Health Care Assistant certification program at Thompson Rivers University. The tuition fees for this program will be covered by the Ministry of Health, and participants will receive a stipend for 37.5 hours of study per week, with the current stipend rate set at $23.83 per hour.

Program Requirements
Here are the program entry requirements:
- Full COVID-19 vaccination is mandatory, and proof via the BC Vaccine Card is required.
- Applicants must be either Canadian citizens or have Permanent Residency status in Canada.
- A Criminal Record Check (CRC) is necessary for those working with children and vulnerable adults.
- A valid BC Driver’s License is required for the Home Support sector (only).
- Timely fulfillment of College admission criteria for the Health Care Assistant Program is essential. Early acceptance by the college enhances your chances of securing a seat.
- Signing a 12-month Return of Service (ROS) agreement, with the ROS period starting upon registration and commencement of work as a Care Aide or Community Health Worker.
- Signing the Health Care Support Worker Certificate Program Waiver to permit the sharing of your pertinent information with the post-secondary institution.
- If English is your second language or you’ve received education outside of Canada, you must pass an English proficiency test within the last 24 months.
- Applicants should not currently hold a Health Care Aide role or have previously completed the HCA program in BC.

Program Completion
Upon successful completion of the Heath Career Access Program, the following steps will apply:
- Registry Registration: You must promptly apply for registration with the BC Care Aide/Community Health Worker Registry once you receive confirmation of completion from the post-secondary institution.
- Position Term: The term of your Health Care Support Worker position will be considered concluded at this point.
- Displacement or Layoff Rights: Northern Health will not impose any requirements for displacement or layoff rights as outlined in the Collective Agreement.
- Immediate Application and Acceptance: You will be required to promptly apply for any available vacancies and accept a Community Health Worker position as stipulated in the Return of Service Agreement.
Qualifications
Required Education, Training, and Experience:
- Successful completion of Grade 10, including English 10 or an equivalent qualification.
- Possession of a valid BC Driver’s License.
Skills and Abilities
- Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Proficiency in dealing with others effectively.
- Strong organizational capabilities.
- Physical fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- Competence in operating related equipment.
